June 2011

MP3s of tunes taught in the whistle and flute workshops at Coldstream's Border Gaitherin' 2011 have been added to the site. There was a strong theme of tunes that are shared by different music cultures, which seems appropriate for a festival on the River Tweed.

The Wild Hills o' Wannies (Northumberland), The Hills of Glenorchy (Scotland) and The Rolicking Boys of Tandragee (Ireland) are all very closely related 3/4 and 6/8 time tunes, but with some telling differences.

The Laurel Tree is the Irish version of an old Scots reel called Locheil's Awa' Tae France. The recordings are relseased under a Creative Commons licence can be downloaded via the Workshops page.

+ Flute and whistle workshops at Coldstream Border Gaitherin' June 2011

I can confirm that I will be running two workshops and performing at this year's Border Gaitherin' Festival in Coldstream. One workshop will be on traditional whistle, the other on traditional flute. There is also an end of festival performance involving all participating tutors.

I am delighted to be invited back to this traditional music festival situated right on the river Tweed on the border with England. I have been attending for many years both as a performer and as an audience member, in the past few years I have been there as part of Absolutely Legless and as a tutor.

This year local flute player and good friend Martin Morroni will also be taking a workshop and I hope to catch him for a tune in one of the many sessions as well.

The family-friendly festival is now entirely self-funding and this year runs from Friday June 3rd to Sunday June 4th. There are workshops for fiddle, pipes, harp, bodhrán, low whistle, accordion and guitar as well as flute and whistle from local musicians such as Lori Watson and Elspeth Smellie.

As might be imagined, it attracts musicians from both sides of the Tweed. See the Facebook page as well as the website for further details.

More free flute MP3s have been uploaded to Flutility. Flutility is a free online resource of Irish session tunes intended to help people learn new tunes. They are recorded slowly and then at full speed. The latest update of this 1994 project is long overdue and brings the total up to 39. Although there were more tunes in the original project, this is likely to be the last update of this incarnation.

+ Behind the scenes at The Flow I am moving the web site onto a WordPress platform to make updating the site far easier and therefore to keep it relevent as a resource for everyone interested in Irish — and other! — flute and whistle traditions.

Breton flute player Sylvain Barou will be giving a weekend of workshops on 29th/30th January at Wiston Lodge, South Lanarkshire.

Organised by flute player Tom Grassie (T[dot]Grassie[at]napier[dot]ac[dot]uk>, there are Saturday and Sunday workshops and sessions in this residential venue. Wiston Lodge is an outdoor education centre in the upper Clyde valley just below Tinto Law, with big fireplaces, great acoustics and is very used to putting on this type of music event.

You can hear Sylvain's music and watch videos at MySpace.

Tom writes:

I would be grateful if folks could send me a deposit of £30 for the workshops..cheque is fine ..made out to myself (Thomas Grassie - Address - 4 Rowhead Court, Biggar ML12 6US..with the balance of £35 due over the weekend at Wiston.)..I am willing to accept an electronic IOU and "definitely coming" if either of these apply.

Re timings.. I'm planning on heading up to Wiston about 10:30 on Sat .. going up Tinto, weather permitting, and having lunch at the lodge at 1:00 ( simple Maths ..Tinto takes about 2 hrs up and back for the "not too fit"..great views ..if no mist)

Saturday workshop 2 - 4:30 with short break for tea and scones( whoopee deal ..included in workshop cost)

Dinner at 6:00 for those staying ( there will be room for 1 or 2 to change their mind on the day if you say "not staying/no dinner" in response to this email and then decide on staying)..Mark has said he'll make a curry..with veggie option too..( have eaten both on many occasions..good food)

..if you have any friends, musical or otherwise, feel free to invite them down for the evening for curry and tunes..plenty of accommodationif they want to stay to ( a bit of notice for the lodge would be good for this..let me know a littlei n advance if others are coming)..be good to have a session in the eveing either way..I'm hoping some local musical friends will come over in the evening..

we have the main lounge for the weekend which has open fire etc..so good room for tunes..

Sunday ( for the super enthusiastic ( not me))..run up Tinto before Breakfast..cold shower not obligatory

Breakfast 9..ish

Workshop 10-12:30.. ( more tea and scones)

Lunch 1:00 ..

then up to you..

Sat Lunch through to Sunday lunch including D Band B is £39.83

No lunch Sat then as above £34.72

Most accommodation is in dorm type rooms ( no TV's in rooms..great shame) ..there's log cabins if folks would rather share these..I can speak to the lodge..depending on whether there is anothr group in our weekend ( I hear there may possibly be cello workshop using another section of the building)..we may be able to have a number of the bedrooms to ourselves ( useful if anyone snores)

If you're interested, please contact Tom directly. Hopefully see you there!
