November 2003

+ Flute player and teacher Grey Larson has a new book and accompanying double CD out on Irish flute and whistle playing and this has been added to the Publications page.

+ Flute maker and player Skip Healey has another recording out. 'Have Ye This One?' is a double CD of tunes played at different speeds for those looking to learn more tunes and has been added to the discography.

+ Flute maker Casey Burns's site, which now includes some useful FAQs for those looking to buy a flute directly from a maker, has been added to the Links page.

+ I have also added a link to a photo of one of his left-handed instruments and that of a left-handed Rudall and Rose on the left-handed page.

+ To avoid the confusion which occasionally occurs when submitting information to the discography via the form, I have added an alertbox to confirm entries have been sent.

+ The next update will be sometime around the 3rd Friday of December.

October 2003

+ Harry Bradley has a new CD out with The Tap Room Trio, featuring Jesse Smith on fiddle and fluter John Blake on guitar and piano (a busy year for him). The details have been added to the discography.

+ Highland piper Iain MacDonald has recorded a CD with fiddler Iain MacFarlane. Flute and whistle feature as much as the pipes and these details have also been added.

+ The next update will be sometime around the 3rd Friday of November.

September/October 2003

+ Chris Norman's Scottish tour dates and flute workshop have been removed as the events are now over.

+ The link to the Knotted Chord web site in Ennis has been removed as the business has now closed. A shame I think, as it was a well-designed and useful site with a friendly and apparently efficient service. Independent outlets are a vital means for obtaining traditional music and they help artists to have their work heard. Please continue to support them where ever you can. Thanks to all those who raised and verified this for me, including Sophie Hale, Cathy Sharp, those on the Woodenflute and Irtrad lists and Dennis Gormley in particular.

+ Matt Molloy's web site has been added to the discography details. Thanks to Bo Tuflåt for this information.

+ Marcus Hernon's web site has been added to the discography details.

+ Terry McGee's list of links to historical flute sites has been added to the resources page.

+ The updates log has now been split into smaller file sizes by year.

+ The next update will be sometime around the 3rd Friday of October.

August 2003

+ Details of Chris Norman's Scottish tour dates and flute workshop in Dunkeld have been added to the events page. Thanks to both Pamela Carr and Malcolm Reavell for information on these events.

+ The Burwell Bash has been removed from the events page as the event dates have now been and gone.

+ A link has been added to Paul Mulvaney's invaluable teaching notes on traditional playing, which have now been made available on Larry Owen's Woodenflute site.

+ I have added a link to the historical flute collection at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston to the resources page.

+ The next update will be sometime around the 3rd Friday of September.

July 2003

+ I have added another recording to the discography. John Skelton & Kieran O'Hare have recorded that rarest of beasts, a CD of dueting flutes (with whistles thrown in for good measure). It's a great idea and one which some solo recordings have featured for just a track or two, but I'm not aware that this has been done for a whole album before. Co-recorded by and featuring guitarist Dennis Cahill, it is self-published, so see their web site (external link) for further information, links to ordering information and sound samples (although I couldn't get the latter to work on my Mac when I tried it). I understand that it will be available through a number of distributors. See also Brad Hurley's site for a previous interview with John (external link), who is best known for his work with The House Band.

+ John Blake (flute), Lamond Gillespie (fiddle) and Mick Leahy (bouzouki) have a CD which came out earlier in the year which reflects some of the current London Irish scene.

+ Harry Bradley's excellent second recording was somehow overlooked from the discography but has now been added.

+ Boxwood has been removed from the events page as the flute school dates have now been and gone.

+ Please note that the July update was late due to a honeymoon followed by gigging commitments. The next update will be sometime around the 3rd Friday of August.

June 2003

+ I have added another recording to the discography. Michael Hynes and Denis Liddy from County Clare have a new CD out. Thanks to Gary Gibson for bringing this to my attention.

+ The Boxwood flute school in Nova Scotia has been added to the events page.

+ This next site update will be sometime around the third Friday of July.

May 2003

+ I have added two more recordings to the discography. Grey Larson has a new CD out with Paddy League on guitar, 'Dark of the Moon'.

+ Brian O'Connor's 'Come West Along The Road' has also been added.

+ I have finally added a sound sample to the East Galway page. This is of Mike Rafferty and is used with his kind permission. Many thanks are due to Lesl Harker and Terry Rafferty for helping to arrange this, and of course to Mike Rafferty himself.

+ All sound files now come in MP3 format as well as AIFF.

+ The link to Steve Mansfield's ABC collection of tunes from the Woodenflute email discussion group has been updated.

+ As the Border Gaitherin' at Coldstream has been and gone, I have removed the notice for it. Hopefully everyone had a good time.

+ This site is usually updated sometime around the third Friday of every month. There may not be a June update however, as I will be geting married, but things should be back to normal in July.

April 2003

+ Added two relatively recent releases to the list of recordings. Firstly, 'Touch Me if You Dare' by Clare fiddler and fluter Peter O Loughlin and Ronan Browne (pipes) to the discography. I've also added some more details to the record of their 1988 release.

+ Also added 'Happy To Meet' by PJ Crotty (flute), James Cullinan (fiddle) and Carol Cullinan (piano) to the discography.

+ Added piper and fluter Tomás Ó Ceannabháin's 'Fonn le Fonn' to the discography.

March 2003

+ Added a CD by Anthony Quigney (& Aidan McMahon, fiddle) to the discography.

+ Added information on The Border Gaitherin' at Coldstream to the news and events page. The layout of this page has also been tweaked to make it easier to read.

February 2003

+ Added Paul McGrattan's new CD to the discography.

+ Added Chris Norman's latest CD to the discography.

+ The news and events page now carries information on this summer's Burwell Bash near Cambridge in the south of England. In future, any outdated events will be removed.

+ I have added a link to the searchable ABC archive TuneDB.

+ A broken link to the Berkenhage site has now been fixed. Thanks to Richard Moon for drawing my attention to this.
